Internships & Community Service
During the six-week sessions in Salt Lake City and New Orleans, you will work approximately half-time at a community-service job or internship. This will give you work experience, help you get to know the city better, allow you to explore different kinds of jobs and, in the case of community service, do some good. We will help you find the community service job or internship that is right for you before we get to the city. Because it is an issue of what your interests are, it is hard to say in advance what your internship or community-service job will be like, but here are some possibilities:
- Building houses in New Orleans
- Working in an environmental advocacy organization
- Working in a radio or television station
- Doing street counseling with homeless kids
- Working in a legal-aid office
- Working on a political campaign
- Working in a newspaper
- Doing outreach for an activist group
- Being a classroom aide
- Volunteering in a women’s shelter
- Interning at a local theater
- Working in a community garden
- Working in a community garden
- Helping with an after-school program
The possibilities are endless; we will work with you to find something that’s right for you. Whatever you end up doing, you will learn valuable lessons about the city and about work. You may discover a job you love, or you may discover that something you dreamed of looks drearier from the inside. Whatever your experience, before you go to college [or go back to college] to prepare for a career in the real world, it’s best to get a taste of what the real world is like.
